Practice Observations Plus A New Offer

Butler hosted an open practice on Thursday, the 9th of 10 before heading to Australia. This gave me my first look at the 2013-2014 Butler Bulldogs. I’m still awaiting Internet at my new house, so we will make this short and sweet since its coming from my phone (probably with typos and all, so my apology for the odd format today)

– Elijah Brown has the potential to be an impact player now and eventually a star. He is quicker and stronger than I realized (and I already knew he was athletic). He has a pretty jumper and played with the poise of an upper class man. I absolutely love his game. He has the toolset to be an NBA player (a long way away from that though, don’t get me wrong).

– Kellen Dunham has gotten stronger (and no, his new muscles have not hurt his shot). He will probably need to be a big time scorer this year, and he played with that mentality today. He was looking to shoot on every possession.

– Coach Miller talked repeatedly about the maturity of the freshmen. They really don’t look like freshmen out there. They appear to have high basketball IQs and are all well put together physically.

– Coach Miller also told me that Butler will continue its policy of not offering until they see two years of high school transcripts. He stressed the importance of being sure a player can handle the rigors of being a student-athlete at Butler.

– Alex Barlow has improved his shot. He demonstrated a quicker release than I’ve seen in the past and knocked down a few shots in full court drills. With Butler losing a lot of scoring it will be more difficult to hide Barlow on offense this season, so it is key that he makes strides on that end of the floor.

– Fromm will be a fan favorite this season. He absolutely dominated the glass and won the hustle plays this evening. He simply isn’t going to be out worked on the floor. Butler needs someone to step in and give quality minutes down low and I think it’s going to be him. This could very well be his breakthrough year.

– Aaron Jordan, a 2015 SG from Illinois, was in attendance and confirmed to me that he received an offer today. He also has offers from Illinois, Wisconsin, and Creighton. Jordan visited Butler prior to the July recruiting period.
