He was asked to go and play in Peru. There were 3 alternates that went to workout with the team Sean being one of them. I can’t remember the player but one was out from the start and Sean was asked to go in his place. Sean has had a problem with his L foot. Had some treatment earlier in the summer thought he was good to go. Flared again while at Providence. Cooley called Val, Val said no, he can’t go, I want him back in Indy for treatment on the next available flight, and so he was. He has been to the specialist and had an MRI Monday. I get so tired of reading all the assumptions on this board. His sources are correct you’re assumption is wrong.

I’m glad he is getting his foot looked after and is in Indy hopefully lifting. McD is a critical part of the team. Don’t need him in Peru.

I’m glad he is here too however it would have been awesome to see him play with the guys in Peru. He is working out most days more than once a day. Looking forward to the season!

Dude, it wasn't a ****ing assumption. The roster was released by Team USA before the practices in Providence. McD wasn't on it. He was an alternate, whatever. What Woods reported when he reported it was indeed wrong.

I mean, do we expect Woods to ever be right? Dude is a chump.

No, he wasn’t wrong. You assumed he was wrong. But clearly your angry about it . Let me see if I can help you understand this one more time. Sean WAS an alternate, hence release of roster without Sean. While there he was asked to join the team and go to Peru. Had to decline due to the issue with his foot that flared while there. The statement issued by Woods was made after Sean had been invited to go but had to decline. I’m sure if you look up the current roster versus the one your referencing it will be different. It won’t have Sean because clearly he couldn’t go. I believe it will have A.J. Reeves who wouldn’t have been on the first roster as he, like Sean was an alternate going into the workouts.

I think Golden could be a bad-ass. The guys got a motor and he's an enforcer under the basket. He's had his head in the right place much of the time but needs work. But damn... he's a hustler and he's shown a sweet shot. I want to see more of that offensive toughness on D, though. Hopefully he can find just a touch more lateral quickness.

There's just something about that guy. It's a bit intangible to me right now but I think we'll see good, good, things from him. Maybe even a touch of Chrabs or (gulp) Howard.

Edited to add: Actually, if I remember last season correctly, Golden was involved in a couple of nice inside-out passes for assists à la Andrew C.

Oh... also, unrelated to anything else.... I am the only one who thinks Pete Buttigieg looks a bit like Brad Stevens? Or maybe it's mostly because they are two seriously smart white boys from Indiana?

Yeah, it's eery. I might get frisky with the lookalikes during the dregs of league play and do a democratic primary lookalike...

Given the size of the DEM candidate field, you won't run out of possibilities :).

At one point last year, I was super optimistic about this upcoming season. Then, the second half of last season happened...

I don't know that we could say we really saw anyone show great development leaps last year. That needs to be very different this season.

The whole team regressed. There was zero development. I'm happy for some recruiting success but the court tells it all. Butler, since I have been mostly breathing, usually improves as the season goes on, and high waters at the right times. Last year, plummet. Everyone got worse as things went along.

We need to show better. Show effort and show hope for the future.

I still think Brunk will be a decent lost for us... PJ and fowler are small losses that we SHOULD be able to make up for but we will see how this goes...

I don't mind and am happy to be done with Brunk. He's a *****'s ***** and wanted to be at IU. He helped cause this team's regression last year.

Oh and don't forget, late in the IU game, he blew a lay up...uh huh He can walk in front of a train for all I care. Was carrying water for IU the whole time he was at Butler.

After almost fifteen years of following Butler basketball from the state of Texas, I finally joined the forum.
I started watching Butler basketball after they defeated Gonzaga in the NIT Season Tip-off in 2006.
What was so impressive about that Butler team and the teams to follow was that these teams
were better than the sum of their components. Butler was able to demonstrate that through
great teamwork and execution, it could beat teams that had superior athletes. On another forum, I have heard
mention how negative and critical this forum can be, so, being a longtime Butler fan, I wanted to inject
some positive comments. First, I am fully supportive of Lavall Jordan and his program. Some make mention of
last year's team getting worse than better. I think that this was in a large part to not having anyone to guard agile
power forwards and provide some rim protection and shot blocking.

Also being a 20 year Gonzaga fan, I think we should take a look at what happened with Brandon Clarke
this past season (after his redshirt year). Keep in mind that Clarke was coming from a very poor mid-major school, San Jose State and had no outside shot. His performance last year speaks for itself. That is why I am so high on Bryce Nze. I don't think he has the all the athletic abilities of Clarke but I think he will be surprising a lot of people. The major deficiencies last year wore down the team and truly got them discouraged (defense at the post/power forward, rebounding, shot blocking). Bryce will be bringing strong offensive and defensive rebounding , defense for most positions and the best shot blocker Butler has had in years. I really like Sean McDermott who plays with everything he has and then some. However, it was painful to see him having to defend the 4. I am sure that the 3 point shooting slump he had toward the end of the season was a result of the energy he had to expend guarding forwards 30 lbs heavier. This will not be the case this year so I expect to see better scoring, accuracy and defense.

In regard to the 5 spot when Nyze is not playing it, we now have two options. There has been way to much bad mouthing of Derrick Smits. I also followed Valpo last year and saw many of their games online. It was definitely painful watching Smits, especially on defense. However, after watching a few clips of him in practice this summer I am encouraged. He is moving much quicker, showing more intensity and shooting well midrange. When I was in high school, I transferred to a different school my last two years. My sport was wrestling and at my old school I was on the bottom of the pile with little self- confidence. The change of place and given a chance for a more active role made a huge difference. I went undefeated my senior year. I think a change of place, coaches and players will have a very positive effect on Derrik. Plus, it is now or never for him to excel in college basketball, especially if he holds out some hope of playing professionally somewhere. He knows from the feedback he has received that DEFENSE is the number one area where he needs to improve. Let's give him a chance before we start counting him out.

I have been following Bryce Golden since he committed to Butler. He had to battle some physical ailments last year and we have only seen a small fraction of what he can bring. First, he is a hard worker and fast learner. He is wearing a number on his jersey that has special significance to the Butler Bulldogs family. He want to prove worthy of wearing that number and I believe he will. I can easily see him on the floor with Nze. On offense, he has a nice outside shot and can play more on the outside with Nze down low. On defense, he would play the low post where his size and muscle will be needed and Nze will be able to guard agile power forwards that would give Golden trouble away from the basket. With both of them on the court you will have some serious muscle to crash the offensive glass.

Not always, but I can easily see McDermot and Battle playing the 2 with KB or AT at the 1 and Tucker at the 3, Nze at the 4 and Golden at the 5. That lineup could give us some serious firepower. We definitely will need Smits along the way and I want to be totally surprised at the step up he makes this year.

That being said, Butler has one of the toughest OOC schedules I have seen them play. They are playing a lot of strong teams from power 5 conferences and some tough mid-majors. I think Wofford is going to be a real challenge. In the tourney they beat Seton Hall and would have beaten Kentucky if Fletcher Magee had even a bad night (he had an awful night, 0-12 from 3 point killed them).
