If Beilein leaves, why wouldn't LJ be on their short list? Unless UM goes the Memphis route and hires Juwan Howard (more qualified than Penny), this is a very real discussion. Like OSU, it will come down to LJ's career desire. If Mack left Xavier, why wouldn't LJ leave for UM? UM has proven to be patient, giving Amaker 6 years prior to Beilein and with 2 national championship appearances in the last 5 years, their resources and facilities are unmatched and only growing.
Worried? No. Is it a non-0 chance of happening if Belein leaves? Yes. 1.) Vall was a long-term assistant at UM. 2.) Vall is from Michigan, but Butler alum. 3.) Like it or not, the timing and the low-cost to acquire by UM would make Vall an attractive choice. 4.) UM can back up the Brinks truck. See Boltmann. All that said, I don't think Vall goes if given the opportunity right now for several reasons. Five years from now? I'd be more concerned. But yes, it is something that we do have to think might happen. I'm more interested to see what Butler would do if it did happen. Do you beg Matta? Do you bring in Ron Nored? Do you simply turn over the reins to Kampen? I assume Matthew Graves would be in the conversation. Shrewsberry too.
I wouldn't be as worried now in fact I welcome it. He promised his girls they were done moving until after high school and he seems like an honorable man and his word means something...
At least LJ was at the golf outing this year (Boltmann was not, for obvious reasons). Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops mobile app
I think The girls would be ok if their dad told them they had to move to new school and a new house . . . with a new Ferrari for them in the driveway!
I learned long ago that actions trump words. I agree that LJ seems like an honorable man but if there’s on “dream job” for him it might be Michigan. It’s pretty much the only school that concerns me to be honest. All that said, if we were to lose him, I think the program will be fine. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops mobile app
I believe Lavall promised his daughters that he wouldn’t move again. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops
No way on Graves. Can’t imagine they’d turn to Matta. Prob Kampen or Shrews. Luckily this won’t be a reality so just board banter. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
This is a pointless discussion. However, I'd be in favor of handing Nored the keys to the corvette. Not even kidding.
I hope he stays for another decade, and hope LaVall stays in Indy for even longer. Beilein's a great coach. Glad he decided to stick it out in Ann Arbor.
I'm still confident UM wouldn't have hired LaVall had JB left at this juncture. But one potentially positive thing I hadn't thought much about until now is that this ordeal really signaled that Belein isn't thinking about retirement in the near or even intermediate future, given how much thought he gave to such a big new undertaking.
For any procrastinators on donations for priority points, donations to Athletics Improvement Capital Fund will help facilities and donations to the Blue Team Basketball Fund will go to Basketball Ops such as coaches salaries and recruiting budgets. I don't care about anyone's feelings about a specific program, I don't want anyone to be hurt or taken away from the game. Wishing Beliein a speedy recovery.
As I would suppose 99.9% of all posters on this site feel. Odd that you led with that unless someone posted something otherwise....
Led with that bc it is a Butler forum. And I know there are fans of other teams here too. Didn't want to derail the conversation by debating the merits of a program when the intent was the health of the coach. Sent from my SM-G935V using Butler Hoops mobile app
There's a good chance LJ would be a candidate for the UM job if Beilein ever left. Doesn't mean he would consider it, but my guess is he would get a call/conversation.
