I guess I'm not understanding why so many folks are speculating regretfully what could have been from a recruiting standpoint had Brad hung around. Cody Z was the only top recruit I remember Butler being close on (and that was well before Brad left).

What I can remember personally is being incredibly disappointed that there wasn't any uptick in Butler's recruiting quality the 2-3 years after the two title game appearances. At the time, my perception was Stevens seemed far more interested and infinitely more proficient in coaching x's/o's and analytics than recruiting.

I know there aren't a ton of NBA fans here but I think Poku on the Thunder may be a better comparison.

I think that’s probably a very good comp, but I think Chet is a much better ball handler and a touch more fluid. Similar game for sure though.

If people want to learn more about Poku, this is a cool short video. He's pretty unique. Total beanpole. Youngest player in the NBA.

I believe Bluiett and Macura both would have gone to Butler had he stayed. I think Kyle Guy was also very possible.

I agree I don't think we saw the immediate recruiting uptick following the Final Four, but I feel like it was trending towards improving.

I'll be honest I completely forgot about Trey Lyles, and I remember now how Butler made it in his top 4 even though it didn't feel legit; I do remember Zeller, but I didn't feel at the time he was leaving after one year. Anyway, all I really meant to say was whether he wanted to compete for one and dones every year, because the thing about Zeller and Lyles is they were right in the back yard. In those cases, it doesn't hurt to try.

I think that he recruited the players who were interested in coming here. I also think the Horizon League hurt us a ton so we could have seen a massive change in who was interested.

Terry wants to be a HC, but curious as to why he thinks this will get him there sooner than at OSU?

Holt's had what, two?, former assistants become head coaches. Painter's had six in that same timeframe. Might be part of the reason.

I think this sets him up better in Indiana - maybe more jobs would consider him here? Not sure.

After 7 years with Holt, I don’t think he had much more to gain by working there anymore. He can go learn something new. Certainly doesn’t hurt himself.

Interesting. Good for Mike, another former Dawg in the coaching ranks!

Painter’s had 6 AC’S become HC’s since Shrage went to Elon 2 years ago?

Painter also let Shrewsberry run the Purdue offense last year, so he had head coaching responsibilities (despite being an assistant).

Maybe Shrewsberry put in a plug for Terry or he'll be taking over Shrews's old role--but either way, he may be able to learn something fresh and gain new exposure.

I was referring to Holtmann's time as a HC, not just the last two years. I thought one of his assistants succeeded him at Gardner-Webb, but looking back I see I was wrong.

Two of his assistants at G-W are now head coaches, Takayo Siddle at UNCW and Jay McAuley at Wofford, though both landed their jobs 5+ years after working for Holt.

In that same time frame Painter has had Paul Lusk (Missouri State), Jack Owens (Miami (OH)), Greg Gary (Mercer), Steve Lutz (Texas A&M-CC), and Shrews (Penn State), all of which went directly from the Purdue bench to head coaching gigs.

That suggests to me that Painter actively helps his ACs move up.

Yes, Painter absolutely works to get his ACs promoted. He gives them a wide range of responsibility and lets them show what they can do. Shrews basically ran the entire offense from game planning through in-game calls. I think that would be a real attractive option for someone anxious to move up.

Ugghh. If he's gonna leave Holt and OSU, would have been great news to see him return to Butler. Best wishes for continued success to TJ ( except for when he runs I to the Dawgs on and off the court and then he can bite it)!
