I realize that COVID has thrown a huge wrench in to the 2022 recruiting cycle. However, I can hardly remember the last time we were even remotely connected to a '22 prospect. Eerily quiet! Any word on who we are prioritizing? Are we in "wait and see mode", and planning to use the AAU circuit to make offers? What do we need in the class, and how many spots are available currently?
With Markeese's departure and assuming no additional '21 pickups or incoming transfers, there are four scholarships available for the 2022 class. I do expect Butler will be going after some transfers, though.
In connection with our recruiting efforts, who do you think will be back next year? Due to the special COVID year NCAA rules, theoretically, every player could return. On the other hand, we already have had one transfer announced. Will there be others? On a scale from 1-5 (5=certain to return; 1=definitely will not be back), how would you rate our roster? Thompson Nze David Bolden Hodges Golden Mulloy Harris Tate Johnson Coles Wilmoth Donovan Parker
We have five scholarship players (Thompson, Nze, David, Bolden, and Hodges) who have played four seasons, including this season, but who are still eligible to play next season due to COVID rules. We have seven other scholarship players. Regardless of which of the five four-year players returns (on scholarship) and assuming no one else leaves, does that mean that we have six of 13 available slots for new scholarship players for next season? (Hodges always planned to stay and play next season, but did we pick up an additional open scholarship slot for next season by him playing this season?) We have three commits (Hughes, Taylor, and Thomas). So, do we have three available scholarships for next season?
It will be interesting to see how BU uses these final roster spots for 22-23. Expectations should probably be to hold one scholarship open for a potential transfer. Beyond that is anyone's guess, with still a number of quality recruits available.
Check the side with the recent posts, there's 2 threads with him, under current Butler players and a little bit on the 2021-21 roster page
It's really not that quiet haha. I posted my 2022 recruiting roundup a little under a week ago, with updates on Butler's efforts in the class. It is behind the paywall, but here is a little summary. - Chas Kelley is one of the top priorities in the class and is currently on campus (his official visit started today) - Kebba Njie remains a priority in the frontcourt, he took his official visit in early August - Butler is in the hunt for both Josh Reed and Connor Essegian as the other likely priorities - will update when given permission on if they have visits scheduled. - I expect Butler will take one or two more in this class. I know you mentioned that you really like Chas, but do you, personally, have a preference for two of the 4 aforementioned that you would feel comfortable sharing? Maybe it would be based on need or fit with current roster if you wouldn't want to say you think a is better than b. Sent from my SM-G977U using Butler Hoops mobile app
I think adding Kelley's playmaking+shooting as a big point guard and Njie for depth in the future frontcourt would make them my No. 1 and 2. Reed and Essegian are both quite solid and would be very happy to add, but I think I feel more comfortable with wings than guards/bigs since Harris/Taylor/Simonas/Thomas are already in the mix with multiple years left. I'm all for adding positional size, and Kelley fits that. I will admit to not having watched enough of Reed to really have a strong opinion, but I trust the staff's evaluation and have heard good things from other scouts. With the transfer market as it is and the players already on-roster for the future, I'm definitely looking at positional fit more. But obviously the coaches have a better idea of what they already have than I do, given they see them in practice every day
Who else are we looking at for 2022 or even in the running for right now? Or does it seem kind fo wrapped up so for now and maybe someone decommits or changes their mind? Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops mobile app
Based on Lukas's most recent Patreon article, barring something unforeseen, that's a wrap for 2022... I really hope this season delivers and gives us something to be excited about! Sent from my SM-G977U using Butler Hoops mobile app
Anyone want to take a bet that we don’t sign another ‘22 recruit before next season? Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops
I gotta think that they roll the dice on Comer as a stop-gap at PG. Otherwise it’s Tate coming off an ACL as the only true PG after this season. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops mobile app
I will say that I wonder if they put pressure on Hughes and/or Simas to redshirt for class balance and development reasons. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops mobile app
I think there's a greater likelihood Pierce would shirt than Simas. Not that I think it's likely Pierce would shirt, I just get the sense it could take a little bit before his basketball skills catch up with his athleticism so that his athleticism can actually pop when on the floor. I had Hughes pegged as a definite redshirt before the defections...and I probably still think that's the case even with those developments. And yes, for now it's a wrap. If a god's gift falls down from heaven, possible we ink someone else. But for now it's all about the transfer market. There just simply isn't much interest left in this class. People blow up and that can always change...but actions seem to say for now, it's looking ahead to the season and nabbing a transfer or two.
