Manhattan kicking it off early this year. I know its been mentioned in other threads, but it's also, apparently, time to get this season's coaching changes thread underway. Firing Masiello now is just strange.
Yes, the timing does seem strange. But just speculating here. . . . there is probably more to the story than meets the eye.
So the digging into it says the new AD and the coach never got a long and don't like each other. They just extended the new AD's contract, the coach's contract ends after this year, they are picked 2nd and have the conference player of the year, they had a meeting and then he had a meeting with the president, guessing that didn't go well, he was then let go by the AD...just a horrible decision thinking this wouldn't backfire as they might not be able to field a scholarship team now...She thought the players and fans would be on her side and not the well respected beloved coach...shockingly bad read on the room, no team, no fans, the school has a disaster on their hands...
“We thank Coach Masiello for his service and wish him well,” Manhattan athletic director Marianne Reilly said in a statement. “As we look to building successful teams for the future — and with recruiting season beginning soon and Coach Masiello’s contract ending in April 2023 — we determined that it was the right time to begin rebuilding from the top down.” Maybe the AD thought she was firing the Tennis Coach? [also phenomenal thread tag]
If this is really about the interpersonal relationship between Masiello and the AD, it's truly bizarre. You suck it up and deal with it for 5 more months, unless he crossed some line that no employee can.
Hartford is open a day before their season is set to start. John Gallagher resigned in protest after the school refused to send a trainer to a closed scrimmage with Dartmouth and one of his players got hurt. This is Hartford's last season in DI. They announced the move back to DIII last year after Gallagher got them to their first DI tourney.
Somehow we missed adding Texas to this thread. Now Notre Dame joins the list. Two intriguing jobs, in my view, and likely to be among the biggest openings this off season. Some familiar names here as possible Notre Dame coaches: https://www.cbssports.com/college-b...-among-possible-targets-to-replace-mike-brey/
Interesting with Holtman, Shrewsberry and McDermott named as possibility’s. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops
McDermott is a head scratcher. Holt isn't leaving OSU unless he gets fired or the Kentucky job opens up and they want him. But Shrewsberry? I think that would be a great gig for him if he's okay with moving his family again.
Mike Brey confirmed he is NOT retiring. Last year at ND but he's not done coaching for good. Brey to GTown would be an interesting considering Brey's ties to the DC area, but Ewing presumably earned himself a multi-year extension with his signature win over DePaul this year.
Are we sure Notre Dame is even an upgrade to some of those jobs? Maybe their Athletics Department has a lot of money from football, but it'll always be a football school. To me, it doesn't look much better than either Ohio State or Penn State--if at all. Maybe Holtmann would bolt because he's on the hot seat anyways and this buys him more job security, but other than that...
Upgrade? Not from OSU, probably from PSU. But with Holtmann it might just be a matter of convenient timing for both parties. He'd be a good fit at Notre Dame and it gives him an off ramp if things are really as toxic as they seem to be between him and OSU boosters. We know he keeps one eye on the door and it might be looking good right about now. I don't see PSU letting Shrews leave and I don't think ND gets into a bidding war for him. You can see why he'd be an attractive candidate though, given his history at Butler and Purdue.
Interesting conversation as back in the day the talk was if Brad left Butler (this was pre FF runs) that ND would be a good fit. What goes around… Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops mobile app
High Point inexplicably fired G.G. Smith (Tubby's kid) today after only 1 season. They'd be smart to promote Sean McDermott's uncle, Linc Darner, imo, but their crazy president will want a splashier hire than that.
Nate James out at Austin-Peay after only two seasons, which included a conference change, is another head scratcher. I guess it's residual from the brawl they had with North Florida. Only way it makes sense. Also, I saw a report that Ole Miss is talking to Chris Beard.
Boeheim, in the postgame presser today, said he gave his retirement speech last week and no one noticed. Sounds like another big job is open.
