Glad we didn’t settle for Phinisee. Not even starting for a blah UC team averaging 1ppg

Glad he's having a good time at BU. Believe he has another year of eligibility remaining after this one. Will be great if we have him for two seasons.

From Akeem Glaspie's Indy Star article on the NC State game, here's the status of our injured players:

"No timeline has been established for the injured players. Jalen Thomas has progressed to doing some drills in practice. John-Michael Mulloy is wearing a walking boot on his foot. Ali Ali is still experiencing concussion symptoms and Myles Wilmoth has remained with the team, but was not participating in the open portion of practice last week."

Thomas seems the most encouraging. The most discouraging is Ali. We need both of them going into conference play.

I've stayed quiet on this but....

A concussion doesn't take this long to recover to the point you aren't even with the team. Concussions suck, I've had a few from head knocking an opponent going up for a neutral ball...but this seems just strange.

It is strange. Of course, the collision was so intense that it broke his nose and required surgery. So, if it truly is just a catastrophic concussion that is forcing him to basically shelter in a dark room for almost a month now, then I really don’t see him playing this season or at least returning to anything approaching his talent level.

In other words, I’ve pretty much accepted that he’s not going to contribute this season, which is worrisome for this team’s results but it will most likely help us to evaluate our other guys and force them to learn via trial by fire ala Turnbull.

Now, if the season ends on March 3 and Ali enters the portal on March 4, then it really gets interesting. I mean, I want to believe that the intensity level is so extreme in practices that we are literally beating each other up, but I don’t see that translating onto the court, so… Time will tell. Anything from Ali at this point will be a bonus.

I think most of us need to just adjust expectations and buckle up for the rebuild.

I can’t remember what injury kept Ali out of the summer trip games.

Yeah at this point I don't anticipate much from him. If anything. Maybe he surprises us all and is awesome...but frankly that boat seems to be out to sea.

At this point I'd be happy to get Thomas and Wilmoth back, does anyone know what exactly is Wilmoth's injury is? I think having Thomas back allows Manny to play without having to worry as much about fouling and having Miles back gives us a true 4 taking some of the pressure off Luko. It's one thing to have a 8 man rotation it's quite another to only have 8 men that can play.

I’m in “believe it when I see it” mode when it comes to this program and injuries/eligibility. They’ve earned that reputation.

I agree that seemingly not being with the team is odd and in an information vacuum we tend to start thinking the worst.

But not every concussion is the same and some do take a significant amount of recovery. I'd guess it is a very small percentage, but it's not zero.

I had a student a few years ago - a DI volleyball player - who had lingering light sensitivity for months. I knew about it mainly because I had to provide accommodations for the entire semester as a result.

I have no inside info here. Butler being so tight lipped about player health helps fuel these conversations. Just saying it's possible it's nothing more than an awful concussion that is taking longer to recover from. The last three years have forced most professors to accommodate students being in and out of class in a way that having someone in class, but not on campus, is not that big of a deal anymore.

I deal with concussion patients somewhat frequently (I’m an optometrist) and while majority of cases just require special glasses, school accommodations, and rest; there are several cases that come to mind where patients had severe vertigo or exercise intolerance and had to be managed by an ENT/sports neurologist for vestibular rehab or vision therapy. I’m sure he’s getting the best care possible and is likely being followed by a specialist to get him all the resources he needs. But it isn’t completely unheard of to be out 3-6 months depending on symptoms. Also this is just talking about concussion, nothing about the fact he essentially broke his face. No one really know was it just his nose? Was it an orbital fracture? Sinus reconstruction?

Not sure it’s been mentioned on here, but in the limited amount of time Turnbull has played, he already looks better (freshman comp) than any center Butler has had since… Joel? Maybe Wideman, but I don’t recall much of anything from him his freshman year. Not counting Chrabascz, as he was really a forward who was just so good with his footwork and angles that he could take on true centers.

Very impressed with how agile he is for as tall as he is. The block and save from going OB he had the other night was pretty impressive. Think he’s going to be a good one.

Butler has struck out often on big men, so, really happy to see this already.

Really hopeful this year is Manny/Thomas and a bit of Turnbull and next year is Manny/Turnbull.

Manny and Thomas both have 2 years of eligibility if they want it (Manny- medical, Thomas-Covid year)

Jalen Thomas changes this team if he can play side-by-side with Manny. We already have quick guards who can defend. Now we need rebounding & more shot blocking.

This season is far from over.

Considering how relatively small our starting lineup is outside of Bates it would be interesting to switch out Simas or another smaller player for Turnbull instead of Tate or DJ to see what happens. The kid is an excellent shot blocker and rebounder and is agile. He has played a total of 29 minutes yet has 4 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.
