Oh man, you called me bud! Internet fight won!

The fact of the matter is the only conference he ever won is the Mountain West, he was just fired for under-performance (drastic, literally anyone should be successful at UCLA). He was there for SIX years and the best he did was make it to the sweet 16...while also missing the tournament twice. So yeah, he got the job, but was obviously unqualified. To top it off he's a documented scumbag. He's the exact opposite of anything Butler would ever consider.

Sounds like you have a very limited grasp on Christianity and religion in general.

Have you ever met Barry? To insinuate he dislikes people because he leans a certain direction politically and/or follows a certain religion is absolutely hilarious.

Your last sentence is correct though.

@Hinkle was clearly referring to our vice president, who has repeatedly used his (misguided) understanding of the Gospel as a cudgel. Few things make me angrier than people who profess faith in one breath and then clearly show a misunderstanding of the Gospel in the next.

Barry Collier has been an excellent athletic director. His public support of people whose worldview and track record is antithetical to his work as an athletic director is surprising. Perhaps that is a sign of how secure he is in his position.

Few university employees would get the leeway to "like" or support some of the things on social media that he has, though, because they are counterproductive to creating an inclusive environment.

It'd be nice if we could talk basketball here without the politics, but the way Collier weighs in in social media is what opens the door, not any particular poster's response to that.

You’re the one who suggested he coach Butler. I didn’t compare him to anyone. He’s clearly a very mediocre college basketball coach with a very exciting name. That is all.

If this is still the Barry Collier AD extension thread then:

Steve Alford is just a guy. Same thing as Bruce Weber or Cuonzo Martin.

They’ll have some good years, but nothing really inspiring.

I believe that Steve Alford IS a "proven" basketball coach. In my opinion, he has proven that he is a mediocre coach at best. From both a coaching and personality perspective, Steve Alford would be a terrible choice and fit for Butler, in my opinion. I also suspect that very few basketball minds would agree that he is a good coach (in my opinion, again). He can recruit (at a primo school like UCLA), yes; but coach, no. A person can talk numbers ( e.g., NCAA appearances, Sweet 16's) which are only OK, but he has consistently under produced with the very top talent he has signed, in a middling league. Furthermore, just watching how his teams play year in year out says a lot about how good of a coach/teacher he is (read: isn't). Personally, if we had an opening a week before the season started and Alford offered to coach for free, I would hope Barry would say, "No thanks."

Why do you have to do bring in someone who’s proven if you whiff on Jordan? Just because one guy doesn’t work doesn’t mean the model is broken.

I agree, there has to be a legitimate coaching search if the move on from LaVall. Not just looking down the bench or someone who is "the butler way" blah blah. A real search to get a real talent will be needed if things keep slipping. We all hope that isn't the case, but the chances are pretty good from what we've seen that it very well could, and we can't lose this program to the abyss on a permanent basis. Crawling back up the ladder in the big east is a little more difficult than a down year in the Horizon was.

As much as I don't believe LaVall will succeed long term at this level, my every hope is that this topic becomes moot and he proves any of us that are worried, dead wrong.

On the contrary, the way they’ve done it has produced unparalleled success for a school similar to ours, so just because you don’t have the success you want with one hire, doesn’t mean you should get away from what you do well.

Maybe the success was a fluke, maybe the failures were, but one was.

We don’t know what Miller would have done. I’ve heard some REALLY good things about him but we just don’t know.

We have won games with culture, not talent. That’s why the butler connections are so important. They’ve already had the tryout to carry that culture forwards.

The Butler way is cute. It's outplayed and IF Holtmann doesn't fall into our laps, the butler way would never be spoken of anymore as it would represent poor basketball.

Sometimes you need to step your game up to stave off failure. I think we are at the end of the "butler" line if this hiring continues to flop. Barry has to seek outside the box coaches...and there are plenty. Again, we all hope it doesn't come to it, but it very well may and if it does, it's time to switch things up from the norm.

Agree, if LJ doesn't get it done let's move on from the "kid brother" BU coaching cycle. None of the Final Four coaches went to their schools. Brad & Bolt didn't go to BU. Jay Wright didn't go to Nova, Wojo didn't go to Marquette, etc. Let's grow up already.

I'm not a Bruce Pearl fan, but it's undeniable what a name brand coach can do for a program.
