It certainly would make the scholar athlete thing harder to justify. But, under normal circumstances I don’t agree they aren't compensated.

I know: tuition and books and a dorm and a meal pass. Although many colleges are slashing tuition. Should they reimburse athletes for this pay-cut?

I understand what you are saying, but as someone who is in the world of education, it feels kind of disrespectful to all the educators doing the absolute best job possible in these circumstances. My fellow educators are working harder and more innovatively than any other times in their careers to provide the best education possible. Many of mine have been instructing virtually since March. And they would much rather be in person.

No disrespect intended at all! I know educators are doing yeoman's work right now and I applaud their dedication and efforts. My point was that should the teams need to go into a bubble for a month or longer and be completely virtual, it’s not a great setup—perhaps “backward” is an overreach—but not as “good” as it could be. No reflection on the educators, more about the virtual system.

    Straight from the BU Website:

    "Tuition: $42,410
    Estimated Housing and Meals: $14,700*
    Fees: $990
    Total Direct Costs: $58,100

    Indirect costs 2020–2021
Indirect costs are the average living expenses students may incur while attending Butler. Butler will not bill for transportation and miscellaneous expenses, however, students may choose to have the bookstore charges billed by the University. To help you plan for these additional expenses, we provide you with these estimates.

    Books and supplies: $1,000
    Transportation: $950
    Miscellaneous expenses: $2,100
    Total Indirect Costs: $4,050

    __________________________

    Total Cost of Attendance: $62,150"

Seems like a pretty decent pay day to me, on top of the publicity and opportunity to showcase your talent to further your basketball career. No, not just the NBA. Coaching, scouting, overseas, etc.

This "compsensation" is not taxed, either. Which means it's worth even more.

It's still crazy after watching Myles Powell for the last couple of years that he didn't get drafted. I realize the NBA is an entirely different beast, and drafting is mostly based on projection. But I still feel like someone is going to get a steal with him as an undrafted rookie.

As a Knicks fan, I sincerely hope you're right about Powell being a steal.

Xavier's Ben Stanley has had his waiver for immediate eligibility denied by the NCAA, per Travis Steele (

This definitely makes me less confident.

I don't think it changes my confidence level at all. There have been a few rejections this offseason and Stanley is now one of them (though he probably should have gotten it). Stanley's case is a completely different one compared to Hodges. Additionally, I think there is a much higher likelihood that ETSU "okays" a Hodges waiver compared to Hampton and Stanley. We will, of course, have to wait to find out and there's no telling whether or not he is going to receive one, but I don't think this particular decision should affect anyone's confidence level.
