    Great article. Thank you!
McDermott was absolutely "rock-solid and consistent" and perhaps that rebound at the end of the game that got him to the free throw line and avoided an empty possession should be a "highlight play."

I thought it was funny also, but I'm in the south and although I grew up Yankee, I'm a converted dingbatter... (Better than a 919er, but only because I converted totally and grew up in central Ill and IN, so I didn't have the NY stench on me when I moved here.):p;)

Your last sentence could not have been more accurate. KenPom has McD with the #1 Adj Offensive Rating in all of D1. Unfortunately, his usage % is under 15% and lowest amongst Butler starters (and backups lol). Loved what I saw last night with him taking it to the rim more often. I hope this continues as Butler will be objectively better if it does.

I'm still wondering if the person who fixed the bucket gets "Custodian Expert of the Week" in the Big East. There would have been no amazing finish without her/him.

I was glad to see Golden get 33 minutes; been thinking for a while that he needed to get more playing time, and it sure looked like it last night. He has been averaging around 20 minutes a game, and I know some of that is due to some foul trouble, but hope he consistently plays more like 25-30 a game.

I can't remember many games where we faced guys who were on fire as a duo. Just a ridiculous night for both. At his size, Bey could go pro this year if he shoots like that on national TV during March Madness.

Raftery was correct, really. But the shot went in so yay for that.

I really really like the set we’ve been running at end of games. McDermott is deadly when they leave him open in a slip ask gtown. When they don’t leave him it eliminates the double team on Kamar which at times can give him trouble. If that is our go to set down the stretch I’m cool with never calling a timeout at the end. Such a great run

I suspect Teams are going to ICE it instead of switch it.

Interesting fact: Butler has been behind or tied in the final minute of regulation in 4 of their 6 BE wins. STJ, MAR, GT, VIL.

There were a lot of new wrinkles in our offense last night. Things I haven’t seen much of this season. I think adding new dimensions makes us harder to defend. I really hope we see more of this the rest of the way.

At least two fouls called on Butler should have been turnovers on Nova.

    The following also occurred:
Butler held Villanova to its third lowest three point attempt rate on the year (a number a lot more controllable than *make* rate), it’s third lowest offensive rebounding rate on the year, and despite running them off the three point line, Nova shot just 44.7% from 2 - it’s 7th worst mark on the year.

Want to cite our record in games where teams attempt just 30% of field goals from 3, have offensive an rebound rate of just 21%, and shoot under 45% from 2? I’d imagine it’s outstanding. And all of those are a credit to the defense and just as (or more controllable than) the free throw and turnover rates.

If your argument is the defense did some good things and some bad things, and Villanova’s shooting made it such that Butler’s shooting had to be good or they’d have lost, then I agree. But isn’t that obvious?

Come on Dawgs, as I predicted before the game we were due a little “Hinkle magic” and that’s exactly what we got! As Tony Hinkle himself said......”The team that makes the most baskets usually wins” (or something like that). Not only was Wednesday night super enjoyable, even with the leak, it gave us our 1st true glimpse of what this offense can be!

Hinkle, I don’t think you’re making the right comparison. You’re comparing Nova’s performance to how Nova has done the rest of the year, when the pertinent comparison is how Nova did against us last night. My comparison measures we did against opponents. I’m not sure how you look at the data I provided and conclude that it doesn’t suggest that minimally we were outplayed on defense. I don’t see any way that you could plausibly solicit the case that our worst defensive outing of the season was entirely a fluke even if you hadn’t seen the game, but if you did you saw our guards and wings getting straight up torched. Thomson had by far his worst game defensively, and they targeted baldwin 18 times (!!) and were effective at it. We saw miscommunication, lack of communication, lack of effort, slow rotations...everything.

    To revisit your argument,

Your argument also is perspective is predicated on the idea that all shots are of the same difficulty and that’s not the case. We are celebrating Bryce and Sean because they had to step up and do things they had never done before for this to come to fruition. It’s great that they did, but let’s not act like they were in a comfort zone.

Nova’s offense on the other hand got whatever they wanted. One of the reasons that they shot so few 3’s relative to normal is because they got to the basket at will. We couldn’t stop them off the bounce and they shot 54% at the rim. It’s also disingenuous to cite their 2 point percentage and not acknowledge that part of driving and not shooting a 3 is increasing the probability of getting fouled and going to the line. That happened a lot.

It is true that we have a very good record under your conditions (13-1), but that set of constraints misses the biggest contributor to Nova’s offense yesterday, which is the lack of turnovers. It’s not the shooting that I’m ranting about, it’s the controllables. In those 14 games we forced an average of 12.4 turnovers per game, which is ten more than we had yesterday.

We simply were unable to make their guards uncomfortable or keep them from getting the matchups they wanted.

There was certainly something in the air. It’s the second game Ive planned on attending that I haven’t been able to get to, this one because of weather. The other was marquette, so all the Hinkle Magic when I’m at home haha.

I love that millisecond after Gus stops announcing and before the ball goes in...someone near them yells out "Got 'em!"
