According to Tom Davis, Holtmann got his contract reworked again this offseason with the Georgia Tech offer. It'll be interesting to see in the next couple of years what he's making.
Tubby to Memphis. Rumor has it he will hire (or at least try to) Penny to the staff. If so, decent hire. If not, not sure I get it. I would have thought they'd go after younger. But, this is what they got.
For a quick fix, settle down and balance out the program, it is. I agree. But he's 65 and I don't think he'll be a HC for more than 3-4 more years, so, I think that was the thinking here. Bring in someone that can settle the ship, has had a history of decent success, and that can win in the AAC. And in the process of it, groom whoever it may be to take over. He'll be better than Pastner because he's got much more "dog" in him and can get after guys, doesn't have 100 weird habits, can relate to the community better etc. It's not the worst move in the world, but as I said before, if somehow he can get Penny or some type of former Memphis local on his staff, that will really energize the base around here and really help with recruiting. I think he'll do fine. 20-22 win seasons and NIT/maybe an NCAA birth. Which, right now, if I'm a Memphis fan and see how low Pastner brought this program, I'm ok with really.
I was looking at it from a program stability standpoint. If he is given the budget to hire and mentor a couple of high quality assistants, this could set up that program for well over a decade.
I've heard Lubbock is just past the end of the world, but they still have Big 12 affiliation. I don't know. I just don't understand how it's that big of an upgrade. Memphis is nice and everything, but they're still in the AAC. That league isn't going to survive when UC and UCONN get pulled away.
Lubbock is hell. I've had two friends and an acquaintance from grad school who ended up on the faculty out there because TT pays above average for newly minted PhDs. Every single one of 'em got out of Lubbock as fast as possible. Despite being in the AAC, Memphis is a much better gig.
His staff, as currently set up, is pretty good. If he can add a local guy to help with the recruiting (very unique around here) then he'll do well. And we're on the same page on stability for sure. That's what it needs in the shambles it's in.
Much better. The recruiting base is so rich, that's all you have to do. Get in bed with the big recruiting influences, do the dirty things you have to and you'll win here. Pastner never got that and never would have. Same way with Atlanta, so he'll be a disaster there too. But if Tubby is willing to get a little muddy, he'll do very well here and set the program up for success (much more than it is now).
