I am warming up to the idea of smits
But only if he can knock down the 12-15 footer
Wideman finally added that gam and he became a great player
We need a big who can spit up and stroke
My only concern is that he is not any better than the big men in the league and that what worries me but used correctly he may be able to give us 10 and 5 which I would take
Plus does any one know how well he was at getting to the line? We need that improvement as well

I'm warming up on Smits too.

He has size, really good bloodlines, and had solid production at Valpo. He also looks a bit quicker than Brunk or Fowler.

I think the fact that he can play immediately, and you can roll his scholarship toward a freshman/grad transfer a year later and it helps next year's Bulldogs on the court, as well as the program going forward.

I think it also allows you to then shift your focus on a grad transfer point guard with the remaining scholarship this offseason (or give it to a future frosh).

Smits had 142 FT attempts this year. Nate & Joey combined for 137 FT attempts this year.

I think we all agree LVJ needs to seal the deal with Smits ASAP.

A poor man’s Matt Haarms? Sure - I’d take it. If he turns out to be close to Haarms, even better.

Was it the one yr between Fowler and Smits for choosing Butler? Maybe wrong.

    Goddamn tall white euros. SMH.

Butler's 5 spot is anti affirmative action, that's for sure.

How does he compare to other BE centers? Would he be last?

    He'd be 11th or 12th.

I don't think he's anything like Haarms, tbh.

I don't see nearly as much shotblocking potential like Haarms. I'm sure he'll get a few just by his sheer size though.

I do see some nice low post passing and touch, some nifty spin moves, and solid footwork. I'm guessing his dad showed him a lot of that.

What I don't see is much above the rim potential. I do think he looks quicker than either Brunk or Fowler though, which is a bonus.

Lets not forget LaVall played against him at Milwaukee 2x and had to prep for him. I also don’t LOVE it but I’m fine with it for the mentioned point of freeing up the 4 for nze/golden some and having people play their natural positions. Our defense AND offense suffered because of that this year. Plus frees up space for 2020s.

    Meh. I’m assuming he’ll commit.

BU needs a stud with the last scholly. There’s like 10 guards worthy.

Which is either terrible or outstanding, depending on if you are expecting him to be a starter or a backup (I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with your ranking, I haven’t even thought about trying to rank them).

Agree! We need somebody with handles and hopefully a shooter at guard! Only have Baldwin and Thompson with high level handles + Battle as a Freshman.

His 142 attempts were in 695 minutes played. Brunk/Fowler played 1224 minutes combined. His FT Rate was 58.3%, which was in line with Joey's rate (59.1%).

Yeah I was kidding about the ranking, I have no idea how he would stack up. Definitely a change in strength and competition, I think he could be a 20ish minute a game and a 5/6 pt, 4/5 rebound type. Marginal bench player to fill a void, or a starter which allows others to play their natural position.

If we could add 20-25 mins of consistently ok to good minutes out of the center position it would do wonders for next years prognosis
