A little surprised to see Larry Bird in the background. I didn't realize he still had a role with the Pacers.

I'm looking forward to seeing Smits play for Butler.

He's been a sort of advisor ever since stepping down as president of basketball operations, though his role has never been clearly defined. I think he's still around to ensure the Pacers continue to burn draft picks on slow, white power forwards. So it's really no surprise he's hovering around Smits.

I imagine he can jump more than 3 inches off the ground, so he should be an improvement playing center over the 2 giant sloths we had last year.

Better late than never, glad he is on board. It will be fun to watch him meld in with the rest of the team. One added bonus Mulloy will go up against him ever day in practice, which has got to help both of them. Seems there will be valuable pieces int the front court with Smits, Golden, Nze, and Mulloy.

Derrik implied that Miller didn't really want him. Stevens was the one who offered. Offer was never pulled, but he had zero contact with the Miller staff. He believes LJ will allow him to play a more complete game. Pick and pop action, passing from the high post, etc. Says Valpo just wanted him down low. Rik bought season tickets this year and moved back to Zionsville.

It'll be interesting to see him against consistent high level play this season. I'm curious to see what he can bring and how he fits. I do think we will run some offense through him for sure.

I'm not expecting a ton, but I'm probably expecting averages of maybe 8 and 5? Maybe a little less depending on how much we show a smaller lineup look.

The fact that Zionsville did P&R concepts in HS, combined with Derrik seeing this being a part of his game, should lead to better offensive continuity.

He also knows he needs to show better defensively and on the boards to have a shot at his dreams after this season.

Hopefully, he can make some of us original naysayers, myself included, believers in his game. If not, Golden and/or Mulloy better be ready.

I can visualize some occassional lineups with both Smits and Mulloy on the floor - assuming Mulloy doesn't redshirt.
