What guards/wings in this class did they strike out on that they seriously pursued? It kind of seems like he became a priority, and not out of necessity. Had a great summer and is a shooter. You appear Indy based. Have you seen him play? Until Butler decides to, or can, start paying for legit top 100 talent this is the route they are going to have to go for HS recruits it appears. I'd rather take a chance on an under recruited local kid with a relationship to the program than some random recruit out of the DMV (or wherever).
Anytime we get a commit I get excited and optimistic, but I understand where you are coming from. It stinks he isn’t more nationally recognized and isn’t even ranked top 5 in state yet, but it sounds like he is trending up. I’m happy to hear of all the Indiana kids, he was one of the breakout ones this summer. But I’m still perplexed why we can’t land top 100s or even 150s for that matter. JaVall Lordan? Is that you?! I know it’s recency bias but this didn’t work well for Hughes, Thomas, or Taylor. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops
On its own, I don't know what to think, especially when I see the average athlete description in his scout. I hope he can prove the doubters and skeptics (me) wrong. I hope it doesn't say anything about our chances for White. Lukas's article makes it sound like we are out for Sutton. I share others dismay in our complete inability to land top 100 talent. We better be scouting and development miracle workers. Sent from my SM-G977U using Butler Hoops mobile app
I think a lot of the criticism is fair. As a Brebeuf alum, I'm biased and pretty hyped. The way I'm rationalizing it to myself is that we need shooters and until the $$$ catches up the way we're going to have to be successful is by identifying talent before they blow up and sealing the deal.
Anyone have a better highlight video? Otherwise seems like a good shooter and a mediocre athlete at best as has been said.
Well if Haywood can shoot, is a good teammate, and has appropriate size for his position, he'll have an edge on those guys you mentioned. I'm going to trust that Thad knows how to scout talent and especially work ethic until he shows otherwise.
I’m a sucker for guys who can put the damn ball in the basket, especially one with good size. You won’t hear me complaining about this one. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops mobile app
His write-up is almost carbon copy Jayden Taylor. If he can just be a little less selfish and a little stronger on D, I'd be fine.
Im just concerned we are his first major offer and if he continues to improve, he will decommit and go to a bigger program just like in football. Sent from my SM-G975U using Butler Hoops mobile app
In the short term it probably depends on if we miss on both Sundra & White. Agree, we definitely need a known high major commitment in this class. Unless he blows up in school ball, Haywood is probably a redshirt 2. He isn't big enough to play the 3 in the Big East. I don't anticipate many available minutes in a Posh-Moore-Bizjack-Brooks backcourt during his first year in campus (unless Moore pulls an Ali and can't play at this level). Welcome Evan. Keep grinding and prove us wrong kid.
At least his shooting form is close to being the correct form. But I too am concerned with our inability to attract higher talent.
Don’t read into that. Sometimes I just forget things. I don’t know where Butler stands there but I didn’t purposefully exclude him from the list of recent offers, either. Sometimes there’s a hinted message, but this was just me making a mistake.
What kind of Mickey Mouse AAU club is he playing against in these videos? I’ve seen better defense at the local Esporta. Just watch between 0:55-1:15. There’s a dude that looks like Fat Albert’s cousin trying to close him out. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops
To be fair, LaVall couldn't recognize talent if it was pissing in his drawer. Hughes and Thomas had/have as much basketball skill as you and me. Difference is they are bigger and athletic...but were never, ever going to be high level D1 players, or even marginal. How a big east school wasted scholarships on them...it'll always befuddle my tiny brain. Because of success rate, I tend to side with Thad until I'm proven wrong. Which could be any day...but I'll side with that he believes this kid can be more than a cheerleader and he has a plan to mold him into a solid player. Granted though...he had no good offers so it is a stretch. Time will tell. To the point about wanting to land 100-150ish types-completely agree. But...we have everything you can think of going against us. No football money. Not much NIL money. Have been worse than terrible since the damn chinese killed the 2020 season and just went through a transition. We just aren't in position right now to be a power player. Let's see how this new group does this year and then we can reassess. Until then we are nothing but a poor big east bottom feeder.
This isn’t the type of commit we need to succeed in the Big East and nationally-if he is the best we can get. Realistically, I don’t hate it at all. There’s an obvious skill that he seems like he’ll do at a p5 level. Lavall’s recruits just lacked that. The skill he does best is also one we, and everyone else, need a lot of. There’s some project-ability to his frame. If he’s able to be okay at most things and shoot as expected you have a guy who can get minutes in a rotation. If he does one or two more things well you have a pretty nice player. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops
There's an 8 minute video on his 247 page that highlights his Jr. Year. It's definitely better than this one. Sent from my SM-G977U using Butler Hoops mobile app
