His retirement is bad for the Big East. He is super classy and one of the best college basketball coaches in the sport. He'll be missed. This feels like it was 5 years too early but as mentioned, it might be health related.
How about y’all just park these “health related” statements until you actually here something relevant? This is how rumors start. Sent from my iPad using Butler Hoops mobile app
I didn't express a statement as I have no facts upon which to make a statement. I expressed a concern over someone I have great respect for. Nothing more or less.
I have to agree that Neptune must have always been the heir apparent. I would imagine Jay had this planned out at the beginning of the season. Maybe he didn't want to make a big deal out of it, like Mike K did. I would have enjoyed watching Thad & Jay coach against each other. I wonder how patient the Villanova board will be with Kyle?
While the timing may seem odd to the norm, he made sure he stepped away before summer recruiting starts ramping up. EYBL is in town tomorrow
If he had it planned out at the beginning of the season, he would have announced he’s retiring a week after the team’s final game, not now.
This is a point that's getting overlooked in this thread the timing of this decision is real bad for the conference given that Big East is currently in process of negotiating it's next TV deal. Honestly think this is going to put a lot more pressure on conference from TV exec's to add Gonzaga so that they can be the new flagship program in the short term.
Agree, the Big East becoming more competitive in 2022 than in the last decade may have been a factor. Hall of fame career either way.

He knew he was going to retire before the Big East tournament and told the AD as much. He didn't want anyone knowing until his replacement was hired. They kept it close for a month and were going to announce next week because he wanted to get passed yesterday's end of year banquet first, but news broke Wednesday when the circle started expanding as they made final arrangements to bring Neptune on.
To each his own but I find it so refreshing for a coach with his resume and career to humbly and quietly retire in this manner. Sent from my iPhone using Butler Hoops
A summary of last night's farewell by Jay Wright. He addresses why he is retiring ('I had lost the edge") and the seeming "suddeness" of the decision. Coach Wright will be sorely missed. https://nypost.com/2022/04/22/villanovas-jay-wright-reveals-why-he-retired/ Sent from my SM-S908U1 using Butler Hoops mobile app
