Surprised he's on campus already. Wonder how he is finishing his classes?

NC State commencement was May 7th. He is a graduate transfer at Butler with two years left.

He's obviously been able to work his shoulders out! Assuming they hold up, we definitely are not going to get physically dominated in the paint! Seeing that makes my back hurt, though...

If he's healthy...I really think this team is DANGEROUS...Hunter is my X Factor with the shooting from the perimeter, but if Manny is being Manny, this team really can shut down teams & suffocate them

That mid-range stroke looks pretty nice.

Its pretty awesome to be a big man and get to go up against the former #1 overall pick in the NBA draft during drills. You have to be a bit more precise and give just a bit extra to beat Oden, even if it is only a drill.

Manny is going to be an outstanding player for us, but I personally think that was one of the most awkward looking mid range strokes that I’ve ever seen

It's certainly not a quick release but could be effective. His shot reminds me of former BU great Daryl Mason.

I'm certainly not an expert in shooting mechanics. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I didn't know that was even a part of his game from watching his highlights. So I'm just stoked to see that he may be able to knock down a mid-range jumper here and there. Should help space the floor, open up the p&r game, and increase his offensive output if he can consistently hit that shot.

Bates was injured in the first minute of the first game last season and was out for the rest of the season. That seems to me to make him a good candidate for a medical redshirt for the season. If he were to get the redshirt, he would have used only one year of eligibility (he played in 19-20 and in 20-21, but 20-21 did not count against eligibility) so far, so, unless I'm missing something, he would have three years of eligibility remaining. Perhaps someone here knows: if you are applying for a medical redshirt, do you do that right away or do you have to wait until you're approaching the "extra" season the player would play if the redshirt were granted? It certainly would be useful for recruiting purposes Thad to know now whether Bates would have three seasons of eligibility remaining or only two.

It's not exactly Bill Cartwright, but not that far off. (sarcasm)
I didn't know he even had a shot outside of eight feet so I'm pleased to see he has one. I don't think he'll be utilizing it much.

I'm not trying to start rumors, but on the Butler/Penn State broadcast, I thought I heard the announcers say that Bates has a medical redshirt for last season--or they were speculating that he would get one. I've long thought this should be the case, but all I've ever seen from others is that Bates would play for Butler for two years. If he has gotten or gets the medical redshirt, he would have used only one year of eligibility (due to the COVID exemption for the 2020-21 season) before transferring to Butler, so he should have three years to play here. (My understanding is that the traditional 5 years to use 4 years of eligibility was modified in conjunction with the COVID year exemption to permit 6 years to use 5 years of eligibility.) What am I missing?

I think it’s all moot anyway. Important to remember he was in the high school class of 2018, so he’s already a fifth year senior. I’d say the odds he plays college basketball next year aren’t great. The odds he plays in two years, as a 7th year senior, even if he’s able, are zero.
