Out of all the past Butler players, I think I miss watching him play more than any other player. His will to win was just incredible. The effort plays he made were just insanely good at times. One of the smarter players I've ever seen too.

I'd really like to see Barry start a tradition of hanging numbers in Hinkle Fieldhouse. Not retire numbers, but just have those numbers hanging from the rafters with their name on it. 54 would be one of the first one's in my book. Matt might have been the most important player in elevating Butler to a program that now competes for "National Championship's. "

If we retire a number it should be his. I don't think anyone else deserves it outside of him at this point

Well this update was a curse. Matt Howard is out for 6 weeks with an orbital fracture. That's a huge blow for Strasbourg who are down at half in their first Euroleague game against Red Star Belgrade.

Think that was a typo....they probably meant 6 minutes, just lost in translation.

Yep, in practice. It's a pretty big blow to Strasbourg, and they got handled easily by Belgrade. It will really hurt their chances of making it out of a tough group.

If my google translation skills are working I believe Matt was just named 6th man of the year. So that's awesome.

There was none better ever at Butler in what he accomplished and what he meant to the program!

Great interview. Interesting to hear his relationship with Gordon. It does not sound like they speak too much. I wish they asked about Shelvin and the rest of the players

It was a great interview. It's not all that surprising that Matt and Gordon aren't best buddies, not because something necessarily happened to cause that, but there are always people on teams that you're more friendly with than others. Matt really seems to have a good head on his shoulders, would love to see him come back and be involved with Butler Basketball in some capacity, but I'm sure he'll do well with whatever he decides to do going forward.

Will be hard to top Matt Howard as a player who gave more to Butler basketball. Heart of a bulldog. As to Gordon, they played together for just 2 years and have had an 8 hour time difference most of their careers--kinda hard to stay in contact without effort.

Is this an "upgrade?" I know absolutely nothing about the overseas leagues.

    From Eurobasket (

Hapoel Tel-Aviv (Winner League) strengthened their roster with addition of 28-year old American forward Matt Howard (203-102kg-89, college: Butler). He has played for the last three years at Strasbourg IG Basket in French ProA. In 40 games he recorded 6.2ppg and 4.4rpg last season. Howard helped them to make it to the final. He also played 11 games in Basketball Champions League where he averaged 8.5ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.0apg.
Howard has tried to make it to the NBA and played in the NBA Pro Summer League in 2013.
Among other achievements he received All-French ProA Honorable Mention award in 2016.
Howard has played also professionally in Germany (EnBW Ludwigsburg and ratiopharm Ulm) and Greece (Olympiacos).
He attended Butler University until 2011 and it will be his seventh season in pro basketball.
The scouts decsribe him following way: A solid player with a great presence on the court (he excels in intangibles..) and that husling mentality tha could allow him a great European career. He doesn' t fear any opponent and knows how to score inside and to grab rebounds. Needs to add a reliable outside shot to make the definitive transition to the forward position.
