Debuscherre was one of my favorites. As I remember he was defensive POY more than once as well as serving as ABA commissioner.

I idolized him growing up and wanted to go to U of D because of him but for fate I went to Butler.

Skeets Nehemiah was the world record holder in the high hurdles. First man under 13 seconds. And Willie ended up dabbling in the bobsled after his track and football careers.

If you want to go back to the 1960s and 70s, don't forget Ron Reed from LaPorte, IN. He played baseball and basketball at Notre Dame, played with the Pistons for a couple of years, and then had a 15+ year MLB career with the Atlanta Braves and other teams.

    According to Wikipedia . . .
"Reed is one of 13 athletes to have played in both the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball. The thirteen are: Danny Ainge, Frank Baumholtz, Gene Conley, Chuck Connors, Dave DeBusschere, Johnny Gee, Dick Groat, Steve Hamilton, Mark Hendrickson, Cotton Nash, Reed, Dick Ricketts and Howie Schultz."

I suppose it would be possible for Thomas although basketball and track would appear to be a fairly unique combination. No questioning that he is certainly a special athlete. Considering this is the age of specialization, even more so. BU would probably need to make allowances. At least we have shown interest.

Might work in our favor if that is the case. I can see BU (especially the track team to get a talent like that in the door) being more willing to make accommodations than some of the bigger programs out there.

It may require an upgrade on the track and field coaching staff.

    You are correct.

One other interesting piece of trivia from that list: Whereas most of the people on the list played the two sports in different years, Gene Conley played for the Milwaukee Braves and the Boston Celtics in the same years. He was a world champion in two sports in the same year. I think it was 1957 or '58.

Butler had the winner and the runner-up in the long jump at the Big East outdoor championship event. Interesting...

Also of note: I think someone posted Pierce did 23', recently, and the winning jump at this event was 23'11".

Assuming they’re both seniors, they have 5-6 years of more track experience and just won the BE. You’d expect it to be that way...

My point was about how amazing he is at his age. Posting numbers, as a soph in HS, that is close to collegiate conference championship levels. Also highlighting how good Butler's other teams have been in the Big East.

Pierce Thomas seemed pretty excited with our Luke Goode offer.
