Proud to be a BU fan--who else is in?

I take my allegiance to Butler University and Butler basketball pretty seriously--maybe too much so. For me, The Butler Way, is not a cheap tag line--I believe wholeheartedly in it, and I believe those who lead BU and its athletic teams are fully invested as well.

This forum provides a great outlet to discuss this program and I am thankful for the insight and information that is shared here. I am also becoming more and more disturbed by the overt attempts to undermine the public perception of this staff and certain players. Many, if not most, of those attempts are based on conjecture and circumstances that cannot support the claim. If there is unraveling of the success of this program, it will become self evident and the consequences will reveal themselves. Is it necessary to "predict" those failures based on scant knowledge? And to what end--as a grandiose "gotcha" or "I told you so"?

Social media does have influence. I have read needlessly offensive comments by Butler fans on other A10 message boards, unduly negative commentary on current BU players/staff on twitter and some unnecessary comments on this board, some aimed at current recruiting targets.

Opinions well stated and supported are one thing--even if critical of the program--no harm there. Unnecessarily derisive postings (especially through twitter, other boards,) that cultivate a negative perception--what is the point?

As for me, I'm gonna go watch my team play at the finest venue in America, yell like hell, and enjoy the experience (more so with a win:)) and be a proud Bulldog fan.

Dissent is the highest form of patriotism. --- Howard Zinn

People are critical because they care. The opposite of love isn't hate, its apathy.

I'm in on the "proud" part.

Also appreciate the quaint dissent quote.

I'm patriotic in the fact that I don't much believe it.

before you go scouring the internets for quotes, why don't you read, or should I say comprehend Cheer's entire message? "Opinions well stated and supported are one thing--even if critical of the program--no harm there.

Maybe you'd be more comfortable with...

When they had once got it by heart, the sheep developed a great liking for this maxim, and often as they lay in the field they would all start bleating "Four legs good, two legs bad! Four legs good, two legs bad!" and keep it up for hours on end, never growing tired of it. --- George Orwell (Animal Farm)

Somebody that is voting for Romney using a quote from a socialist hero in an attempt to defend their incessant naysaying makes me giggle.

You just need to sit this one out. This is big boy talk. When we get back to favorite colors or what not, jump back in.

Im not voting "for" anyone. This election, like most, is a vote against poor policy.

And Im not "defending" myself. What would I have a need to defend myself for (like the CHD thing, people generally end up there eventually, anyway). Especially to something like you?

I don't know what's more amusing and/or sad, the fundamentally fascist sensibilities of some of you people or the just-under-the-surface racism that pops up all the time.

Why exactly do you think there needs to be some sort of consensus? What are you threatened by?

No one here, but the race thing happens all the time.

Its why certain players "are street-ballers" for example.

I KNOW its noted by people. The reason it was even front of mind is because I literally just got a DM about it and how embarrassing it is (not even necessarily on this board)

Title, I found myself agreeing with most things you say and think, however, I wish you would have kept this to yourself for no other reason than I wanted to bring it up sometime during the season when CHD and/or Aldridge made out of control turnovers and go 1 on 1. These same things that Hopkins used to do were labeled as 'street' because A. he's black and B. he's from the inner city. Basketball minds see these out of control plays as simply that, a bad offensive play. Nevermind if the kid is black or not. However, there are more than a few posters on this board and the yuku board who have never labeled Aldridge as 'street', even though he made the same or worse selfish, out of control plays.

    No I am dismissing you.

It is ironic that you are asking me for an "original thought" when this entire thread was prompted by several people actually not toeing the company line.

Add a cogent thought, even once, and you may get some regard. That's what you want, right?

Criticism is one thing. The "sky is falling," over exaggerated posts are the annoying ones.

Title, you know the difference. You just love the attention it brings you.

Continuous eloquence wearies. Grandeur must be abandoned to be appreciated. Continuity in everything is unpleasant. Cold is agreeable, that we may get warm.
    --Blaise Pascal

Sameness, whether for or against, gets boring (bordering on quaint).

And, no, I'm not saying it has been eloquent. Just sayin'.

The entire thread was started with a very nicely written post by BU Cheer, which you immediately bashed without reading. Then you start rambling about racism (wtf?) and "big boy" talk, and you are asking me for a cogent thought...

First of all BUInsider, speak for yourself. Not all Butler fans share the same opinion, that doesn't mean they aren't REAL fans. Just because someone doesn't look at the program the same way you do does not mean they don't care just as much or more than you.

Secondly and this is directed to everyone, this board has become worse than a political forum. The constant back and forth has turned it into either "Butler is the greatest thing ever and they have absolutely no flaws" or "This team is terrible and it will be years before they are relevant again." No room for discussion, just petty bickering.

I've got news for you, neither position is even remotely close to reflecting reality. The 2012/13 team I think has a shot to be pretty good as long as guys continue to progress as they typically do. It could be a a season where we win the A10 and a couple tourney games, or we could finish middle of the pack and end up in the NIT. We'll have to wait and see. I don't think there is a ton of disagreement overall about this season.

As far as 2013/14 goes, which is the year where most of this heated discussion has come from, it could be kind of scary, or it could turn out to be a decent building block year. The roster as of now looks about like this (I only listed people in one position based on where I see minutes being available, they could easily move around though):

    1 - Aldridge/CHD
    2 - Dunham/Morgan
    3 - Jones/Woods/Smeathers
    4 - Marshall/Berry
    5 - Fromm/Chrabascz

Looking at that, you have a real solid front court that has guys that do a lot of things different things well and complement each other. I think there is a lot of versatility there and plenty of opportunities to create mismatches.

The backcourt on the other hand is extremely unproven and based on what we know RIGHT NOW, unless Jones ends up playing point, Dunham improves his handles and quickness, or Aldridge/CHD become a lot more than what most people project them to be, it is worrisome what a guard dominated league like the A10 COULD do to them. There is zero PROVEN depth there, and adding Castro doesn't solve that problem. Could they come out and play great and surprise everyone, sure, but at this point there is nothing that points to that being the case. I don't see why it is so unfair to feel like 13/14 is a middle of the pack A10 team.

Can we please just get this forum back to discussing basketball and at the very least be civil about it. A lot of you may not like what Title has to say and I do think he goes overboard at times, but when 4 or 5 people jump on him and attack everything he says (even when it is a fair criticism), do you really think you are making things better? Disagree, give a reason why, and move on. First exhibition is in 4 days, let's focus on that and hope for a great season.
