Recruiting Notes 3.0 (The LaVall Era)

Does basketball have the rule like football where you can be older if you did something like play baseball (or military service)and then came back for a different sport?

Or is 25 just the upper bound for those who start eligibility at 18 (say a BYU player who redshirts and does a 2-year mission would be 7 years or 25 (18+7)?

 

Military does get a full exemption. So if you joined 18 prior to college Whenever you're service is done is when your clock starts for 5 to do 4. Often it's hard to gain a D 1 scholarship at that point for to lack of competition and recruitment but could go juco or another route and transfer in

Northwestern Football had an active duty SEAL on their roster for a few years. He walked on and got some special teams minutes. He was early 30’s and it was one of the coolest sports stories I’ve seen.

Ball State football had a 33 year old DE during the 2008 year where they started off 12-0 and ranked 12th. I believe he was a marine prior to going to Ball State.

 

Preston Mattingly was a 26 year old freshman when he played for Lamar at Butler in November 2013. He had played pro baseball before that. He didn't have a military exemption as far as I know, so I'm not sure where he fits in the rules. He played three seasons at Lamar.

He got an offer from Kansas last October... We might be fighting an uphill battle on this one. Gotta think Lowery might have a connection here?

 

It’s going to be exceptionally difficult to get a kid out of Texas.

 

In basketball? There were 20 top 160 players from Texas in the 2017 and 2018 classes. 11 of them went to college out of state. Not saying he'll go to BU, but I don't think leaving the state is the big hurdle.

 

Don't see Butler out recruiting Texas Tech, Texas, A&M, Houston, Baylor, Oklahoma, LSU, Ok State and many others for Texas kids. I think it's a waste of time, money and excitement. Hope you are right and Im wrong.

 

No, I don't like our chances either. My point is just that the in-state vs. out-of-state factor probably isn't going to be why we lose out.
