This is just a place for random recruiting information about the program in general or players who do not yet have their own thread.

What about this Brenton Scott 2013 PG? From twitter it sounds like he has an offer from us. Is this true?

Sam Cassell Jr. was linked to Butler interest a few weeks ago. This recent update (July 1st, 2011) shows there is still interest, but FSU might be his favorite for obvious reasons.

I am away for a few more days on my honeymoon, but wanted to share my new blog for those who missed it, which highlights Smeathers and Woods and their experience in the All-Star game. I will be posting more blogs when I get back!

    Darryl Baker Video

I don't think I've mentioned him on here yet so I thought I would post a video of Darryl Baker from Jeffersonville. I know Butler was on him a year ago. I haven't heard his name all too much recently though.

That has to be a mistake. Butler dropped all 2012 PG offers with the CHD verbal, including Ronnie Johnson's offer who was extremely close to committing to Butler.

I wouldn't put too much stock into Rivals since they usually take longer to update their lists and even when they do upgrade it's not always accurate. For example I know a different 2012 PG who when I checked on Rivals a month a go after CHD commited that claimed Butler still had interest in him and when I talked to him about it on that same week he said Butler never really had any interest in him to begin with.
I remember there being a thread on him on Title's board so it's plausible there was some interest but my guess would be that he had an offer when we still were looking for a 2012 PG along with Johnson but then those offers were gone once CHD commited. Then again with Brad Stevens you know how much he loves his PG's so I have no idea what to expect.

I am pretty sure - as Title has pointed out that Rivals misrepresented a Baylor offer as "Butler".

Either way Felix will probably be heading to Texas.

And it is true that once CHD committed, Ronnie's offer was rescinded - so I would assume that means if other PG offers were on the table, they aren't there anymore either.

    - Center - Nolan Berry?

When I read about his game, he really doesn't sound like a guy who is going to play center in college. From comments about him being better when he isn't locked in the lane, how he's comfortable facing up all the way out to the three point line, how he isn't very athletic and needs to gain weight (185 pounds at the end of last year) - he doesn't seem to fit the profile of a guy you want playing the five. I don't have a link to the article handy, but his coach made it sounds as if his development will determine whether he is a 3 or a 4, not a 4 or a 5.

Here's who we have either signed or committed for 2013-14:

    1 Chris Harrison-Docks
    1 Jackson Aldridge
    1/2 Chrishawn Hopkins
    2/1 Devontae Morgan
    2 Kellen Dunham
    3 Andy Smeathers
    3 Roosevelt Jones
    4/3 Khyle Marshall
    4/3 Kameron Woods
    4 Erik Fromm

Looking at that lineup, I think we need - desperately - to pick up someone capable of playing center in both 2012 and 2013. There's really no way to get around it. If Woods weighed 225 or Fromm wasn't graduating after that season I might think differently, but as it is I think it's crucial to pick up a center in each of the next two recruiting classes. Add a pair of 4/5's to the roster and check it out again - what's the glaring need?

I would argue that there isn't one. The staff has the luxury, in this case, of aiming high and going for the best available because there is no penalty of not filling a need if they miss (as there was in the Zeller scenario - oops). They have consistently followed Irvin, Beachem, and Berry this July and, in my mind, they are all being recruited for the same open scholarship.

There is plenty of time for "backup" options with that last schollie if all three fall through. But, make a splash early with a high-profile 2013 wing and the last two spots may be easier to fill.

    Just my $.02.

I think Berry could be a true 4 which means he could be a 5 in butlers system the way Howard was. You certainly can't bank on that though. I doubt we add 2 sure 4/5s though. I would be thrilled with a 2012 big and then Berry and Irvin/Beachem.

Certainly a "true" four will see minutes at center occasionally (or even frequently - Jukes, for example) with Butler's style of play. I would argue, though, that Howard was a true 5 in a 4-man's body when he showed up on campus. His development allowed him to play effectively on the perimeter, but he wouldn't have been able to do that when he came to college.

Berry doesn't even start at center on his high school team. It's not a ton of material, but Berry reminds much more of a Hummel-type 4/3 wing forward than a primarily pivot player.

If Brad is recruiting Berry to play center, he might as well have not even tried. It's hard to imagine a kid with his size and skillset would choose to play center when he could have the opportunity to use his perimeter skills in college by playing the 3 or 4 at a Big Six school.

I agree with Coogles in the sense that I don't think Berry is a 5, but unfortunately based on what I have seen of our recruiting, it seems as if we might be recruiting him to play down low.

I do have to disagree about Howard though, he was always a 4 man. Check his high school stats and the amounts of three-pointers he took/made (face-up game). His senior year at Butler I think he was finally allowed to play more of his suitable position, but until then Stevens utilized his strength and motor to play down low. In fact, Howard is labeled as a PF and not a C on all the recruiting services and Butler's roster.

    Shanks seems impressed with CSU[hr]
Shanks lives in the same town as me. I'm going to try and see him often. He represents the "missing link" for Butler, if he can develop. You throw a functional 7-footer, who'll be in the 250lb range with all those guards and wings BU will have in 13 onward, you're really sitting pretty to do some of the same things seen recently.
