No questioning the convenience for both students and fans, but after visiting both establishments during the summer months on separate occasions. I can say neither had many patrons. Maybe a dozen or less. The Metro had decent food which was reasonably priced but Scotty's was overpriced and the eats were less than average, although the surroundings were nice. Hopefully the community can find some solutions and find ways to support businesses in the off-season?

Even Notre Dame, with all its money and community sway, took forever to establish a walking-distance parking and dining destination. What you experienced (I'm assuming you're talking about Eddy Street Commons) is less than 10 years old and was not without its growing pains. It was the same stuff - the anchor bar/restaurant has turned over a couple times, but the need is there for the campus and the community.

I think where the Butler situation is challenging is that there's space for 3-4 tenants with little else to support it, whereas Notre Dame has 3x as many tenants (and is expanding - it's a destination shopping/dining area now) and DePaul/Marquette are in city centers with foot traffic. Butler's situation requires that the campus and very immediate community be enough to support it. Plenty of places subsist on a few big nights per year and don't need to be busy every single day.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's a unique challenge that can't just be solved with the same formula used elsewhere. But it's certainly feasible with the right plan and expectations.

I think a club similar to Studio 54 could really be successful at this location. Imagine local celebrities like Angela Ganote, Mayor Joe Hogsett, Jim Irsay, JMV, Jim Danko, and Britt Baker dancing the night away right down the street from Hinkle Fieldhouse. After game parties would be insane. People would stand in line for hours in hopes of getting into the club to dance to the Butler War Song and mingle with the local celebrities. The establishment could serve pork tenderloin sandwiches along with local craft beers (PBR would be available for the southsiders). If things get to out of hand, Roosevelt Jones and Kyle Marshall could be brought back as door bouncers. SpartanDawgs could you bring this idea up at your next meeting with Butler administrators? Thank you in advance.

I think Scotty's as an establishment had been in trending downward for years. I know some lawsuits had been filed against Wise in regards to the financial state of the business. Sad to see that a bar like that couldn't stay on campus. I wish Butler would have reached out to someone else than the Scotty's franchise when they created that bar.

As far as replacement ideas, I think it would be cool if Butler partnered with local restaurateurs or chefs to make a restaurant unique to Butler. Scottys wasn't that unique. Broad Ripple is built on restaurants that are different and I think if you can infuse that idea with the university then you could have something really cool and successful

Actually think it’s pretty smart to put a pharmacy on campus. I know when I was in school I wished there was somewhere within walking distance to get more deodorant, toothpaste, allergy medicine, etc.

Theoretically they could also have interns from school of pharmacy re: cheap labor

BU has in-house health services. My understanding is they can provide medications. Is there not a store for personal items on campus? I really believe the powers to be, should think outside the box. Without convenient free parking, along with little or no ability for a drive-thru will hamper many types of businesses from consideration.

I think they have a convenience store in the apartment villages for some personal items but that's it? From what I gathered is that they are realizing that it can't be all food and they are trying to think outside of the box.... Another thing they have to deal with is the neighbors of the Bulter Talkington area.... They got a lot noise complaints from the restaurant.... didn't think there was that many non student resident housing THAT close to scotty's to be an issue...

Which is a bummer because putting a Wild Beaver night club there with penny beers would be a great atmosphere...

There was one on campus at Vanderbilt. It made sense.

When they were first building the parking garage, there was a rumor that a small part of the retail space was going to be for all of the student-run RBE businesses so they could potentially have a real store front if necessary.

Not that it would be helpful for most of the current student body or neighborhood, but I still think it's a decent idea.
