Thad has one of the best coaching trees in college basketball. Brad Stevens, Todd Lickliter, Brandon Miller, John Groce, Matthew Graves, Archie Miller, Sean Miller, Alan Major, Jeff Boals, Dave Dickerson, and Greg Paulus have all been head coaches at the D1 level. Coaches will realize what a step up it can be coaching under Matta and take these positions. I think we will see a coaching staff on par with the great Holtmann ones with him, knowing that almost every assistant Matta has ever had became a head coach.

Look, this is a *fantastic* hire, and Thad will be able to pull better assistants than most of us ever thought. But I do think it's going to be an uphill climb that takes a year or two. Even retaining the roster and adding some transfers, no matter the coach, I don't see Butler being great next year. Improving? Sure hope so. But any assistant that wants to launch himself into the conversation for a head coach job is going to do it at a program with success at its doorstep. (See Shrewsberry at Purdue. Terry Johnson too - have to imagine that's his path.) Assistants from sub-.500 power conference teams don't get tabbed to be head coaches.

Maybe I'm being overly cautious. I just don't think it's going to be the immediate splash.

Would like to see Rags retained:
—high energy, charismatic recruiter with IN/Midwest roots.
—iirc he spent time on staff with programs that had staffers that overlapped with programs with rich overseas connections. How we ended up with Simas.
—continuity in the locker room and operations on how to navigate the BE logistically. Could mentor a new DOBO.

Agreed totally. Will have to wait and see the roster, but as of right now I’d be THRILLED to be NIT quality.

    I won’t judge anything until year 2.

Do we *want* continuity? If Rags is the best guy we can hire we should, but I don’t see much value at all in keeping guys on the new staff *because* they were on the previous staff.

Like to see us tap the bigs from Africa market along with European players ala Simas. Would think the transfer market and NIL will relegate high school recruiting to the back burner. Kansas and North Carolina reloaded with transfers as did Providence.

Would need to evaluate each AC on their own merits obviously. The first two I listed would be valued in any prospect. The familiarity on the third item is just a bonus—unless the DOBO already has BE knowledge. Not mentioned is any benefit with retaining Simas/Chuck/Jayden/Hughes which I personally hopes happens.

Check out Alan Major. Forgot to mention this above but he's currently the head coach of Patriots BBC of the Basketball Africa League and was an AC for Nigeria in the FIBA AfroBasket tournament.

I would bet Rags stays. He was the one out still recruiting during this flux state. I think that was because Collier was pulling the strings and knew Matta was coming aboard. Rags was destined to stay all along...thus the work that's still going on after the season ended for BU.

No matter who he chooses hope that there is some consideration given to "a-HC-in-waiting" hire. Thad already has plenty of money and is mid-50's with prior health issues so who knows how long he will run with this gig. Have a feeling Matta is going to get this program turned around pretty quickly and it would be nice to have someone on staff to take over when he does decide to hang it up, whenever that eventually happens. Appears Collier has hit a home run with this hire, but would prefer to minimize any of his future "searches" if at all possible. Not sure how much an NBA assistant earns, but BU can now pay an assistant a pretty decent income and offer probably a little more stability (and potential future) than in the volatile NBA ranks. Wouldn't count out Ron just yet. The potential of that situation is probably more on the relationship (is there one?) between Ron and Matta than anything else. A strong recruiter (who spends the majority of his time recruiting) and a strong player development coach would be my preferences, no matter the names. Will be interesting and fun to see where Matta goes.

I'm a little lost on which of the upperclassmen have another year of eligibility. Out of Hodges, Thompson, Groce, Nze, David, and Bolden -- who is eligible to come back?

For the others, do we think Matta will want to keep Hughes, Harris (I'm assuming yes), Wilmoth, Tate, Taylor, Thomas, and Mulloy?

Shouldnt we be looking somewhere at creating a NIL specialist position?

Probably not on bench staff but if you’re planning on pulling in bigger name guys that’s going to be a must.

The Broadripple t-shirt market taps out pretty quickly

This feels like a great opportunity to integrate with the College of Business. They already have student staffed insurance groups and investment funds, set something up with a few professional staff members and then have students to get out and do the leg work with investigation and lead gen.

What’s unique about this situation is that Thad has already had success in doing this, with and without his health issues. I was reading some OSU forums and many said that often times his assistants would go and do the heavy lifting. Matta would still go to AAU tournaments and such but would mainly be the closer once the assistants got athletes to campus. Matta knows his body. Matta could very well be Superman and do everything himself after 5 years of therapy. If Matta doesn’t want to burn himself out, he could also go after heavy hitting recruiters, pulling the strings from the comfort of his office and just be the brains of the whole operation.

Hell, if Stephen Hawking can still write books in his condition, if Patches O’Houlihan can get Average Joes to the dodgeball finals in a wheelchair, then I’m not concerned about Thad Matta getting this team back to the NCAAs. He will get assistants to make up for any shortcomings, if any. That’s why I’m not concerned about his staff— it all depends on what he knows he needs.
