Assuming there is some truth here, one upside to this continuity is a level of comfort and familiarity for returning guys. It’s gotta be the right coach of course. That can matter a lot to these young men and just might provide a needed link to stay. It can be easy to dismiss how disruptive the coaching changes are for them. I’m feeling a lot of empathy for them as students heading into the last three weeks of classes and exams.

Good afternoon everyone! Exciting times for the Butler Basketball men's program. I believe some of the following coaches will be on Thad Matta's staff,

    Greg Oden
    David Ragland
    Jeff Boals
    Brandon Crone

Ideally, you want a season veteran like Jeff Meyer on the sidelines. That my friends, is where Jeff Boals comes into play. As a new poster, I think he would be an ideal addition as he has worked with Thad before. He might also be able to bring some recruits with him!

Based on Miles Wilmoth's frustrations at the prior staff's inability to develop bigs, Greg Oden would be an excellent addition. Additonally, David Ragland should be retained in hopes of keeping Simas Lukosius, and continuing to develop relationships with high school and international recruits. Finally, the Brandon Crone mention is just a hunch. Which rhymes with lunch. And I think I might need to wash down that McDonald's McGangbang, google it, with a tasty frankfurter now.

As I'm sure everyone is aware, Brandon Crone played high school basketball at Frankfort, and their mascot is the Hot Dogs. The 7-11 down the street from me has an excellent lunch combo deal. I like to wait until the hot dogs have been out for hours, usually they put them out at 11, as they have a really nice snap when you bite into them after being on the roller for hours. Sidenote, has anyone heard of Fat Dan's in Broad Ripple? I have heard they have a good Chicago dog, but they weren't around when I was at school at Butler.

The emphasis now has to be finding assistants who can sell, sell, sell since we now have a coach with established credibility from an strategic/player development perspective.

I say we look for the following types of assistants:

1 highly ambitious HC in-waiting whose stock is rising and can serve as Thad's right-hand man (like Nored, although that seems unlikely)
1 recruiting specialist who focuses more on local/regional talent (like Rags)
1 recruiting specialist who focuses more on the Northeast or international talent (wherever that assistant's network is based)

After thinking about this for awhile and seeing the names floated around, I think my realistic preference without any HC in waiting would be:

    1. Fife;

    2. Former HC with limited upward aspirations (Cuonzo, Weber, Major, Whitford, Jankovich);

    3. Up and comer (Kuwik, Paulus, Ragdale).

Ragland - Yes. Seems to me he is a proven basketball coach and perhaps Butler's only effective recruiter the last few seasons. If he helps Luko and co. stay, that's a bonus, but not the primary reason I would hold on to him.

Boals - Yes, but unlikely. I don't see him leaving his alma mater to take an assistant job. He's doing well as a head coach and seems to be pulling in a lot of good recruits, esp. from the Northeast. It would be nice to develop a pipeline in that region since we are in the BE, nationally-televised, and they would frequently get to play in front of their families. He'd be a great right-hand man for Matta and perhaps could eventually take the torch.

Oden - No. He's very early into his coaching journey. Just because someone was a good player and/or has Indy connections and/or played for Matta doesn't mean he can recruit and develop players. Maybe he's got what it takes, but now isn't the time to roll the dice.

Crone - No. I love the guy, but there's not much of a track record there. I'm sure he's learned a lot under Lickliter, but we need proven recruiters.

The only thing I'd add to the commentary on Rags is that yes his most immediate value is retaining Simas and Turnbull, but he's very, very good in his own right. He's a flat out great assistant.

Oden likely wouldn’t be one of the 3 assistants. He’d have a different role.

I like the idea of Oden and believe 100 percent in redemption, but would Butler really hire someone with a felony domestic violence conviction as an assistant coach?

Low key would love to see us bring in Tyler Lewis in a DOBO role (currently in that role at Elon). Having he and his dad's connections back in the program would be nice.

Might generally be the case. I recall a guy hiring a guy with zero teaching or coaching experience or formal training. Things turned out quite nicely.

    Thad’s staff at OSU:
3 assistants, 1 DOBO, 1 grad assistant (Oden), 1 athletic trainer, 1 recruiting coordinator, 1 strength and conditioning coach.

    Painters staff at Purdue:
3 assistants, 1 director of player development (Pj Thompson), 1 DOBO, 1 athletic trainer, 1 strength and conditioning coach, 1 director of video services, 2 graduate assistants

    Marquette staff:
3 assistants, 1 special assistant to HC, 1 director of recruiting, 1 DOBO, 1 video coordinator, 2 program assistants.

    Xavier staff:
3 assistants, associate AD for basketball, 1 DOBO, 1 Recruiting director, 1 Strength and Conditioning coach, 2 graduate assistants.

    Butler (21-22)
3 assistants, 1 DOBO, 1 basketball analyst, 1 strength and conditioning, 1 athletic trainer, 1 administrative assistant.

Looks like we desperately need a recruiting coordinator, a graduate assistant wouldn’t hurt— similar to the role PJ Thompson or Oden is in focusing on development.

I like the idea of bringing in Boals as an Associate Head Coach, but he is making $581,000 plus bonus at Ohio. I don't see him walking away from that for a possible future consideration.

That’s an editor at the Butler Collegian, so while that doesn’t mean it’s 100% accurate, it’s better than some complete rando on twitter.

Right, I think a Butler Collegian editor knows better than to just spew a bs rumor. I’d be ecstatic about this

Mentioned earlier that Matta worked with him for a year at IU and knows what went on down there. Plus has a history with izzo. Just comes down to if you trust Matta or not. Outside of his spat with Woodson, I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be great here.

Just skeptical of the details surrounding his divorce with Woodson and IU?
