I agree, I was impressed with what Pierced provided during the Italy trip, but the fact is not many teams go 10 deep. Who do you propose he takes minutes from? Are you nixing one of the other guys from the rotation and saying he deserves to be in the Top 9? Do you cut even more into Simas or JT's minutes which may then lead to them transferring? I just really don't know how he plays more than 5 min/gm brought in as a defensive specialist/energy spark when needed (barring injury).

You’re not going to monitor the minutes based on preventing a transfer. I think Thad will go 10, maybe 11 deep pre-conference. These things have a way of sorting themselves out. I agree with Lucas on Hughes. D J has a chance of being a fan favorite if he earns the minutes.

I have very high hopes for Pierce's RS Jr & Sr years and, hopefully, beyond. Anything we get before that would be an awesome sign for him and for us!

Agree with Lucas’ starters for now. Think the Simas/Jaden situation will sort itself out based on matchups. And whoever mentioned JMM above—he is healing from an ankle sprain and hopefully returns around the time of the exhibitions/first game. Nothing serious.

Agree with this completely, and it’s a view shared by boots on the ground, so to speak.

Ali, Hunter, and Manny are essentially locks. Chuck is likely. Taylor and Simas - flip a coin, as it relates to starting.

Staff is well aware of the longer term potential of Pierce. They’ll do everything they can to keep him around for the long haul.

I personally like Simas as a 6th man for the following reasons:
    • He gives the 2nd unit some extra size for when Bates will presumably be resting.
    • He can carry the team offensively when he's hot.
    • He is a playmaker and can facilitate the success of others in the 2nd unit with his passing
    • He can play some point forward and push the pace as leader of the 2nd unit.
    • He could switch to the 4 against smaller lineups now and again if you want to pair him with a combination of Tate, Chuck, Hunter, Taylor, or P. Thomas.

Agree. Saw a lot to like in practice, he just needs to have the game slow down a bit and have confidence in his decision making. He’ll contribute.

Agree with all these points and I really like having my starters also be my best defensive players and Taylor is def one of those

Interesting insights, thanks for sharing. Not that it matters much at the end of the day as I'd imagine they'll end up with similar mintues, but it's interesting to debate Simas/Jayden as the 5th starter and what ultimately Thad values most. Is it JT's defense or Simas' offense? What Simas provides, to me, translates to more of a 6th man type of role than what JT does. That is, a change of pace, instant playmaking kind of guy. But, we already sort of have that with Tate.

All I know is I'd love to see the Simas that we saw the last couple games of the season...with the ball in his hands in the PnR, carving up the defense. Pairs nicely with the shooting of Chuck/JT/Hunter/Ali/Tate. People talk about our defense being much improved (and rightly so, it will), but I also think our offense has the potential to be lethal. I mean have we honestly had a roster these last 7-8 years where literally every single player on the floor is a legit threat to score? Bates alone will make a huge difference having someone you can just lob it up to for an easy one, let alone a PG who can shoot, Ali, and improved shooting from the rest of the roster, with better sets from Thad to boot. Our %s were **** last year, but we already had shooters on the roster, they were just always taking contested shots because of bad offense.

The greatest difference will be having a legitimate scoring threat on the interior and a premier defensive player roaming the post. Something BU was sorely missing the past couple of seasons. Those alone should assist in helping to defend the perimeter more easily and creating some opportunities for some uncontested outside shots for the offense. BU should have some seasoned interchangeable parts to work with. The coaching change will have BU moving in a new direction...Up!

I think the board may be overestimating Manny’s likely offensive output/skill. I’m extremely high on his impact, but not because he’s going to be a high volume/valuable offensive threat. He’s never really been that. And I don’t think we need that or necessarily even want a high volume post guy. That’s not basketball in 2022.

His value is that he’s an elite rim protector and can likely become an elite rebounder. He’s not going to flash a huge arsenal of offensive moves and take a high volume of shots and we don’t need him to.

Yeah, all he really needs to do is demonstrate he can knock down the open 15 footer if defenses leave him alone, everything else can be just put-backs and transitions toward the basket. If he were to be no more than a Tyler Wideman but with size, that should be more than enough for this offense.

Don't misconstrue. I'm not claiming he will be a high volume scorer or even a go to guy. I am saying his presence will demand the opposition's attention. He will be a threat. Enough to not allow other teams to focus solely on BU's perimeter players. JMO

Bates was absolutely hitting the midrange game in Italy. That’s one of the things I was most surprised with.

He’s also a guy guards will be able to penetrate and throw lobs to, which is enormous for court spacing. It won’t always show up in Manny’s stat line but a less contested layup from Chuck or Hunter because the post was locked on Manny for a second longer is an enormous upgrade from what we’ve had the last few seasons. How many times did our centers fumble away a baseline bounce pass on something similar?

While we may disagree on exactly what Eric Hunter is, there is no reason to underestimate his possible effect on this team. As good as AT was there, many believe EH he will be a significant upgrade. This was TM's "cherry on the top".

Several "sleepers" on the team who could be pleasant surprises. Fairly deep on athleticism, somewhat unusual but welcomed on this Butler roster. Particularly interested in seeing what Wilmoth brings this year. Has some height and athletic aggressiveness, and has also has shown flashes of a decent midrange and perimeter shot. Could be a fun, and interesting, season.

I like Aaron Thompson, he's one of the best point guards to play for Butler. He did EVERYTHING he possibly could to make his team better given his limitations on offense....With all that said, I also believe that Hunter is a clear upgrade. Thompson needed pieces around him to be truly effective, Hunter does not.
